Understanding the ₹21,000 ESI wage limit
The ₹21,000 monthly amount is generally used as a coverage threshold. It should not always be treated as a contribution cap.
If an employee crosses the prescribed wage limit after the contribution period has started, ESIC rules provide for continued coverage until the end of that contribution period in applicable cases.
What can affect ESI contribution?
Frequently asked questions
What is the current ESI contribution rate?
The standard ESI contribution rates are 0.75% of wages for the employee and 3.25% for the employer.
What is the ESI wage limit?
The standard wage limit generally used for ESI coverage is ₹21,000 per month. Specific situations may be subject to different rules.
Is ESI calculated only up to ₹21,000?
Not always. ₹21,000 is primarily a coverage threshold. An employee who crosses the wage limit after a contribution period has begun may continue to remain covered until that contribution period ends, with contribution payable on applicable wages.
What happens if salary increases above the ESI limit?
If wages increase above the prescribed limit after the contribution period has started, coverage may continue until the end of that contribution period. Payroll records and current ESIC rules should be checked before stopping deductions.
Can I change the ESI contribution rates?
Yes. The calculator uses current standard rates as defaults but keeps the rates editable so the tool can be used for different scenarios or future changes.
Is this calculator suitable for official payroll processing?
The calculator is intended for estimates and educational use. Official ESI payroll processing should follow current ESIC rules, employee coverage status, wage definitions and payroll records.
